Yesterday we held the very first of several Zoom p Yesterday we held the very first of several Zoom presentations with ASAA Founder Keith Ferris. With 20 ASAA members in virtual attendance, Keith shared with us one of his early adventures with an ad campaign done featuring the Mitsubishi MU-2. Afterward, he entertained a Question & Answer session with the attendees. We hope to make this a regular feature with Keith, as well as other notables. Attendance will be limited to ASAA Members, and will add a new dimension to the benefits of joining the ASAA!

We were honored to have a visit by the Under Secre We were honored to have a visit by the Under Secretary of the Air Force, Gina Ortiz Jones, to our booth and display. After receiving a tour of the artwork on display by Chief of the Air Force Art Program, Gloria Ornelas, and SAF/AAOS Division Chief Jessica Oberlander, Ms. Jones toured the ASAA booth and checked out some of the handiwork of our K-12 STEAM artists!

The National Aviation Hall of Fame @nationalaviati The National Aviation Hall of Fame @nationalaviation will be holding the 2022 Enshrinement on September 24 at the National Museum of the US Air Force. In February, 1981, Keith and Peggy Ferris of New J In February, 1981, Keith and Peggy Ferris of New Jersey were in Los Angeles and had lunch with Ren Wicks and Nick Galloway. Nick went back to work while Ren and the Ferrises met R.G. Smith and Norma Bert to discuss the idea of forming a society of aviation artists. Norma was R.G.’s assistant at Douglas Aircraft. The original thought was to call the organization the Guild of American Aviation Artists, but that changed to the American Society of Aviation Artists. Mike Machat was working at Douglas Aircraft with R.G. and was giving input into forming the society. In 1983 Professor Luther Gore in the Division of Humanities of the School of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Virginia organized a week-long meeting of aviation artists from all over the country. He had become intrigued with the art he saw in various publications as he prepared his course in the history of flight for his students. He wondered if the artists he could locate would care to come together to meet one another and share their interests and expertise in the art. The Aviation Art Forum held at the University of Virginia was a success and clearly affirmed for the top aviation artists in the U.S. that there was interest and resource to form an organization. The forum included lectures and demonstrations as well as a week-long exhibition of works in the University’s Art Museum. Encouraged by the results of the UVa forum, the Ferrises began to put together a set of by-laws, after looking at those of the Cowboy Artists of America, the British Guild of Aviation Artists, the Society of Illustrators, the Marine Artists, and the New York Artist’s Equity. Several drafts for the by-laws were sent out by Keith Ferris to Ren Wicks, Bob McCall, Jo Kotula, R.G. Smith (the five prospective founders), and by February 14, 1986, a fifth draft of the by-laws for a proposed society was ready. In March 1986 Keith Ferris sent out letters to the Founders-to-be who signed off on the proposed bylaws and later in March to some 40-50 artists.
