The American Society of Aviation Artists is a non-profit organization founded in 1986 with the intent of fostering through art, the history of aerospace.
The James V. Roy Jr. Award is considered ASAA’s most prestigious art award. The award is presented to an ASAA member deemed to have created the finest entry in the ASAA Annual Exhibition.Selected Jurors at each ASAA Annual Exhibition use a graded point system (1‐5) to evaluate the criteria of ten (10) specific elements in judging member art for the James V. Roy Jr. Award. Would you like to attend this year’s ASAA International Aerospace Art Exhibition and Forum, being held at the PAX River Naval Air Museum ain Patuxent River, MD from June 18-22, 2024? This opportunity might make it a bit easier for you!The ASAA is pleased to offer the Peggy Ferris Memorial Scholarship.PURPOSEThis award honors the legacy of Peggy Ferris for her “tireless efforts and inspiring devotion to the ASAA”. She was the behind-the-scenes driving force for the success of the American Society of Aviation Artists from its inception. As a trained educator, this award will also recognize her lifelong passion for education so that one can reach their highest potential.ELIGIBILITY1. Open to ASAA Members in good standing to include Artist, Associate, Digital Associate, and Foreign Affiliate Artist Members; and Non-ASAA Art Students who have an interest in aviation/aerospace art.2. At least 18 years old3. Produces visual art in a traditional art medium (computer generated art not accepted)SCHOLARSHIP AWARDAwards will only be for the Forum registration and banquet fee of $445 (Forum registration and banquet required). Have you registered yet for the 2024 ASAA Forum???Registration for the ASAA 36th Annual Aerospace Exhibition and Forum at Patuxent River Naval Air Museum is open on the ASAA website, where full details about the event can be found.The Week at a GlanceMonday, June 17th, Exhibition Installation Day: The forum officially begins on Tuesday. If you are in town today, you might consider coming to the museum to help with the installation of the show.Tuesday, June 18th, Registration and Opening Reception: Registration will be held in the La Quinta Inn meeting room lo‐cated on the second floor of the hotel. Check‐in to receive your welcome bag and settle in. Then in the evening, we will all meet at the museum from 6 pm till 8 pm for an opening reception. We are planning this to be a public event, so feel free to invite guests. Enjoy the assortment of hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar while mingling with many of the locals.Wednesday, June 19th, Drawing and Painting: We will carpool to the museum where we will spend the day drawing and painting the aircraft on site. The museum will advertise this as a museum event, so you might expect bystanders glancing over your shoulder. What a great opportunity to talk about aviation art. Lunch and dinner will be on your own for the day.Thursday, June 20th Academics at the Hotel: We are still working on the lineup for the day, but we have confirmed presentations by Mark “Patches” Pestana on the Art of Aerospace Patches, Marc Poole on the Picture Plane and Perspective, and Hank Caruso on Flying and Illustrating Pax River Aircraft. We are working on lining up a presentation on the restoration of the Pax River Astronaut Mural as well as many others. Our business lunch will be catered at the hotel, and dinner will be on your own.Friday, June 21st Naval Air Base Day: We will collect our box lunches and travel to USNTPS for presentations and tours of the base. Capt. Barb Bell, USN Ret., one of the first women enrolled in a test pilot school, will be talking about the early days of test pilot school. CDR Amanda Lippert will give a presentation on flight gear development and testing. Hank is working on shoring up a presentation by the instrumentation group of Pax on the filming of TOPGUN Maverick. We will have either a bus or walk‐ing tour of the base, followed by a presentation on Carrier Suitability Testing given by someone from Carrier Suit. Dinner will be on your own.Saturday, June 22nd Critique, Mentoring, and Awards Dinner: the critique session will be held in the morning in the hotel meeting room. We are working on contacting local schools for student mentoring opportunities. The awards banquet will be held in the museum’s main hall.Ye Bird and Star will be open in the meeting room space at the hotel.Special Note: for those planning on attending the classes and tour of the naval base, military clearances are needed.
