American Society of Aviation Artists
The American Society of Aviation Artists is a non-profit organization founded in 1986 with the intent of fostering through art, the history of aerospace.
This past weekend, several ASAA members participated in the 3rd Biennial "Color of Flight" Plein Air Painting Workshop co-instructed by ASAA Artist Fellow members Russell Smith and Marc Poole. The 3-day workshop was held at the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome in Rhinebeck, NY, and focused on plein air painting including landscape, aircraft, and figures. ASAA members Harry Ward, Steve Ingraham, Andrew Tucker, Joe Walter, Malcom Scott, Michael O’Neal, and Don Meadows were among the attendees. World-renowned artist James Gurney also participated in painting with the group, in addition to joining us for dinner.![]()
The weather was spectacular, and allowed for paintings of the SPAD, Sopwith Camel, Bristol F2B, Fokker D.VII, and Fokker Dr.I Triplane. Exercises included a monochromatic painting, a limited palette painting, and 3 opportunities to work with a live model dressed in period clothing. The first morning began with a classroom session on various plein air strategies, and the following mornings began with a critique of the previous day’s work.![]()
