2007 ASAA Boeing "Spirit of Flight" Award Recipient“Release The Hounds”Russell Smith18×40" oil on linenThe Airco DH2 was designed in 1915 as a single seat scout by British aircraft designerGeoffrey de Havilland. Powered by a 100hp Gnome rotary engine, the DH2’s pusher design was de Havilland’s answer to the problem of firing through the propeller -place the pilot and gun in front of the engine. Although inadequate when compared to later scout designs, the DH2 was a successful fighter for its day and played a major role in bringing an end to the reign of the German Fokker Eindeckers. The machine seen here was assigned to 32 Sq based at Vert Galand, one of the best known British aerodromes on the Western front. This field saw continuous use from 1915 until 1919, and many of the WWI era buildings can still be seen there today. See MoreSee Less

Last Sunday was the 3rd and final day of the workshop. We were fortunate to have world-renowned professional illustrator and workshop participant Chris (C.F.) Payne give a demo on his original textural surface prep technique, and we got to check out some of his beautiful illustrations. For the morning session, Russell Smith challenged the participants to tackle the tricky lozenge camouflage pattern of the Fokker D.VIII. After wrapping up, those who weren’t heading home were treated to the afternoon airshow! We would like to thank all the fine folks at the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome for their gracious support of the workshop, and we look forward to returning again in 2025. See MoreSee Less
